Key differences: art and design are two important members of the visual arts. Art is about self-expression while design aims to communicate a purpose to solve a problem. Art can be interpreted in different ways, while design cannot be interpretive, rather they must communicate effectively and clearly.

Art is the self-expression of the creative or imaginative ideas or emotions of the artist. It is very difficult to explain art because it tends to take an abstract form. People often use the word art in the context of paintings or sculptures. Nevertheless, it has applications in various fields.

Art is the product of the artist’s thinking related to something. It is often beautiful and appreciated by art lovers. Mostly, art is associated with beautiful visual compositions. The relationship between art and design is described differently by different people. However, most of them believe that even if they are considered different, they sometimes sometimes overlap each other.

Design is usually defined as the creation of a designer that is the result of a plan and is developed to solve a specific problem. A simple sketch of the exterior of a building is also a design. Therefore, the term “design” is applied in different fields due to its practical use. Both art and design are related to visual compositions. But art is related to the creative aspect, while design is related to the structural and practical aspect.

Art is governed by internal constraints imposed by the artists themselves. On the other hand, design is usually guided by external constraints (commercial). Art is produced by the artist adding ingredients of thoughts, imagination and experience. However, designs are more organized as they are usually born to solve a specific problem; like a solution.

Art cannot be limited by any boundaries, it spreads its wings depending on the artist’s imagination, but design is usually bound to follow a certain pattern. Art has no specific commercial purpose and is not an expression of the artist. Designers are basically aware of many ingredients related to design, even before laying out the work, as a starting point, etc.

Both of them also differ in the context of their interpretations. Art provides freedom of interpretation in different ways. Design, on the other hand, must simply convey a message as desired by the designer. An artist is most often born with a natural talent for the ability to create art. On the other hand, a designer is often considered a person who has acquired skills through training.

Art can be considered a creative form, while design can be seen as a tool.
